Dumbarton Oaks

Located in residential Georgetown, Dumbarton Oaks Gardens was designed by landscape architect Beatrix Jones Farrand. The ten acres are a mix of traditional English, Italian and French styles, with plants chosen for year-round interest. A series of terraces and gardens include the Star Garden, Green Garden, Beech Terrace, Urn Terrace, formal Rose Garden, Arbor Terrace, Fountain Terrace, Lover's Lane Pool, Pebble Terrace and an Orangery (circa 1810). The gardens also have some magnificent trees such as a Katsura, Japanese maple, English Beech, and White Oak. The creeping fig (ficus pumila) pictured above in the Orangery is a single plant, dating back to the 1860s. [ info ]
