Oatlands Historic House and Gardens
Leesburg, VA

Closes each year from Dec. 31 to late March, opening day in 2012 is March 25. A National Trust Historic Site, Oatlands is a 360-acre estate with a stately Greek revival mansion, magnificent formal terraced garden and 19th century dependencies, or areas where workers lived and worked. It is located six miles south of Leesburg on US Rte. 15.Designed and built by George Carter in the early 19th century, the structure of the garden is comprised of terraces carved into the hillside with boxwood-lined parterres of tulips, peonies, iris, and lilies. Among other features are a rose garden, herb garden, reflecting pool, and teahouse.Photo: Boxwood, larch tree canopy, and English Oak.
