January 28 - March 25, 2012. This year’s Orchid Show celebrates the “Year of China” and 25th year of the Flora of China project, with a magnificent display of 800 blooming orchids, including Cattleya, Laelia, Epidendrum, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum and other varieties. Orchids are displayed as they would be found in their natural habitats, with terrestrial orchids at ground level and epiphytic orchids suspended at eye level atop tree branches. The Missouri Botanical Garden maintains one of the largest orchid collections in the nation, with over 7,500 individual orchid plants representing approximately 280 genera and including over 2,500 unique orchid taxa. The annual show is the only time of year when a vast, rotating selection from the historic collection is available for public viewing. The Garden’s orchid history dates back to 1876, when the first specimens were gifted to Garden founder Henry Shaw.Photo courtesy Missouri Botanical Garden:Denbrobium Kingianum.
