The Huntington Botanical Gardenˇ¦s new 12-acre Chinese Garden, slated to be one of the largest classical Chinese gardens outside China when complete, will open to the public beginning Aug. 5 for a six-month preview of its first phase: the 3-acre Summer Garden. During construction, visitors can tour the 1.5-acre lake bordered by Tai Hu rocks and enjoy landscape that includes hand-carved stone bridges, a stream, and canyon waterfall, set against a backdrop of mature oaks, camellias, and pines.Chinese gardens combine architecture (pavilions, covered walkways, bridges); art (paintings and furniture displayed); literature (poetic and historic references); and botany (symbolic choice of plants and placement).
