Once an artist’s colony, this historic seaside garden was made famous by poet Celia Thaxter’s 1894 memoir, "An Island Garden." Today, the 95-acre island is home to Shoals Marine Laboratory,offering undergraduate education and research in marine science through Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Each summer, SML offers adult and family education programs for the general public. Access to Appledore is via ferry.2010 tours will be available on Thursdays: June 24, July 8, 15, 22 and 29; August 5, 12, and 19. Tour size is limited to 45 passengers.
