Located at what was once a Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse, the Mattress Factory, is considered by many as one of the best facilities for installation art in the United States. One of the permanent installations there is an unusual urban garden created by artist Winnifred Lutz. Inspired by the urban and natural history of the site, the three-quarters of an acre garden is “a vignette of past times within the framework of contemporary Pittsburgh, like archeological sites in Rome and Jerusalem.” Trees, shrubs, vines, and grasses native to Pennsylvania are used. The Heinz Architectural Center of The Carnegie Museum of Art featured this garden installation in its 1996 exhibition, "A Century of Women Landscape Architects in Pittsburgh." The Mattress Factory is open Tuesday-Saturday:10AM-5PM; Sunday: 1PM - 5PM
