The Huntington, founded in 1919 by railroad and real estate developer Henry Edwards Huntington, is a research and educational center set amidst 150 acres of botanical gardens. The beginnings of the Japanese Gardens were acquired in 1911 from the unsuccessful tea garden George Marsh began Pasadena. Features include the Shoin-style house, Zen court, Bonsai court, Suiseki (also known as viewing stones), bamboo groves, Japanese cedars, plants in the tea family, and numerous flowering fruit trees and shrubs native to Asia.
