Tanglewood Gardens and Arboretum

Tanglewood’s history traces back to 1584 when the property was claimed by Sir Walter Raleigh for Queen Elizabeth. Later it was bought by Kate and William Reynolds, president of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and after their deaths, the 1,100-acre property was bequeathed to Forsyth County as a public park and playground, along with shares of RJR stock as a permanent endowment. The 5.5-acre Arboretum now includes an arboretum and more than 20 different gardens, including a Children’s Garden, Azalea Garden, Rhododendron Garden, Bog Garden, Herb Garden, and Wildflower Area.Photo: The Friendship Garden Open daily, without charge."The seat of creaks and mighty trees,Of fertile soil and balmy breeze...Twould fill a page, had I a bookTo tell the joys of Tanglewood!"-- Kate Reynolds [ info ]
