The gardens reflect Jefferson’s original garden plans and are an important part of Monticello. Specific landscape elements, either recreated or existing since Jefferson's time, include: the Winding Walk and accompanying flower beds; the eight-acre Fruit Garden, with two orchards where Jefferson experimented with over 150 varieties of 31 species of fruit; the vegetable garden terrace, and the Grove where young trees, shrubs, and herbaceous flowers have been planted, and vistas, glades, and thickets introduced as Jefferson had originally envisioned.
