Cranbrook House and Gardens

Although George and Ellen Booth had ink in their veins (the Detroit News, Scripps and Booth publishing) and a life in Detroit, they had their hearts set on a “country estate.” In 1904, they bought a 174-acre farm in Bloomfield Hills and named it Cranbrook, eventually building Cranbrook House, based on Arts and Crafts design, and developing complementing gardens. Today, Cranbrook House and its 40 acres of gardens are part of the 319-acre Cranbrook campus, a National Historic Landmark. Gardens: Herb, Rock, Sunken, Greenhouse, Oriental garden, wildflower, meadow, bog, many perennial and formal gardens. Open daily May – October.Photo:Ellen's Garden, named in honor of Cranbrook's co-founder Ellen Scripps Booth. [ info ]
